Internship

Space Syntax runs a lively internship programme in its London studio, offering placements to students from the UK and around the world. Internships typically last between eight weeks and three months, during which time students will follow a programme of fundamental research and practical application. Interns are guided by a Director and Associate of the company but will need to be motivated and able to work alone. They will agree a plan of work at the outset and be expected to report their progress on a regular basis, culminating in a presentation to colleagues at the end of the internship. Interns may also be given the opportunity to work on consulting projects.

APPLICATION DATES

Applications are open to all students at all times, with preference given to students on the Advanced Architectural Studies course at University College London between January and June of each year. There is a monthly review of applications, which takes place on the third Wednesday of each month, which means it may take up to a month to get a response. Applications without clear answers to the questions below may not be considered.

INTERNSHIP BURSARY

Interns will not be paid during their internship programme, however there is a bursary to cover basic subsistence and travel during work hours, at a rate of £17 per day. This does not constitute paid employment but is to cover expenses only. For those interns doing longer placements, for example four to six months full time, there is the possibility of additional funding available to cover accommodation in London.

Interns are encouraged to explore available funding to cover further living expenses either through their universities or through schemes such as the European Commission’s Leonardo da Vinci scheme - http://www.leonardo.org.uk/.

INTERNSHIP LENGTH

Interns greatly benefit from being in the office full time – they become integrated quicker, get greater opportunities to work on projects, become immersed in the office culture, and often have the chance to work on more than one project. Full time internships are a minimum of six weeks, and can extend to a period of three or six months with agreement.

However, we also make part-time internships available for those studying or working. These run for a minimum of three months, two or three days per week, and we make every effort to integrate these interns quickly into the life of the office.

PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIPS

Space Syntax is pleased to offer internships to other professional, academic or charitable institutions as an intensive period of CPD or extra training. Prices are available on request, please contact Clare Laws on internship@spacesyntax.com for details.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • Space Syntax will provide workstations, software and other resources and materials during the internship.
  • Interns will be provided with training on technical issues and the skills that they need for working on projects.
  • Full time internships run for five days per week for a minimum of six weeks, and part time internships for two days per week for a minimum of three months.
  • We are linked with various internship organisations including the Leonardo da Vinci programme, which can provide funding channels for students, and encourage students to apply to these to provide additional support.

Application to the internship programme does not guarantee a placement. We will consider various criteria for short listing, including applicants’ interests, company interests and references from Course Tutors.

“Here you will have the chance to look at how theory can be applied in the real world. And it gives you the chance to think through research questions, and to practise and learn from staff in the company.”

"You'll work hard on great projects, put everything you've been learning to use, learn more than they teach you by using it, and appear ten times cooler than other AAS students when you say 'Well when I was redesigning the Victoria Embankment at Space Syntax we did....' Plus you'll get loads of free help on your thesis that no one else will get."
